7 Attributes Of Ibadan ‘Micra’ Drivers

By Kehinde Ayanboade

Transport business is one of the money spinning ventures all over the world and it requires decent operations and smooth relations with the passengers, drivers are expected to possess certain level of driving etiquette but reverse  is the case in Ibadan, the state capital of Oyo state as drivers of a portable serviceable vehicle, ‘Toyota Micra drivers ’ are not only rootless with the car, they care less about the safety of their passengers hence driving recklessly
Micra came into the system in Ibadan sometimes in 2010, and  it was embraced by people  because it is neater and faster than the ramshackle buses that have dominated the transport business then . Although the government of Otunba Alao Akala introduces Suzuki product of almost the same size with Micra but the government car is not as strong as Micra which is also more affordable by people
What makes micra more popular and useful for transport is the fuel economy and cheap maintenance. It doesn’t consume fuel like other cars being used for transport but carries the same  number of people that other roomy car can carry , packing people like sardines in the car
The ineffectiveness of the enforcer of trafiic law in the country also gave the more strength to do ““anyhow” on the road once they knew the solution is just to drop some amount of money
It is very hard to see Micra without 3 people driving it in a day ,someone will drive early morning  like 5:30 am- 12, another will take over from 12-5 while the last man will drive from 5-10 or thereabout and each of them must make money  hence resolving to reckless driving
Investigation reveals that most of the micra drivers graduated from motorcyclists to car drivers, they don’t don’ts care about the rule once they car navigate their ways .
Below are 6 attributes of the Ibadan Micra drivers according to a report by National Insight News;

They have no Regard for Traffic Laws and Regulations
Transport business is one of the thriving business that gives instant money, most of the drivers of Micra are optional illiterate when it comes to traffic law , they drives against traffic,  care less about drivers of other vehicles on the road  and their nonchalant attitude has resulted into accidents which has claimed many lives  and render many useless
Their Vehicles Are Faulty And Not Road Worthy
To many passengers, most of the Micra are not road worthy, their desperation to make money by all means make them to ignore warning signals and that is why you see than developing fault suddenly on motion causing traffic congestion.  When you see a micra car check properly majority of them either have a broken wind screen or mirror, no better seat, damaged bumper, no full light, damaged dash board, no side glass roller.
Incompetent Drivers Of Mediocre Standard
Most of the Micra drivers are not worthy to be called drivers, they don’ pass through proper driving test  let alone having license.  Like I said in the introduction, most of them just saw driving Micra as an opportunity to make instant money, once they can press Tuttle and clutch to make the car move, everything is set, their attitude and utterances on the wheel makes them look like a psychiatric patients.
.Lack of Vehicle Documents and License:  Micra drivers in Ibadan don’t have correct vehicle documents and driver’s license, and  most of those that has drives around with expired papers and licenses  and that is one of the reasons why the usually dodge security agencies and vehicle inspection office and those that cannot escape bribed their way through

.Desperate To Source Income: more than one driver depends on one vehicle to make money on daily basis, anyone used to commercial transportation in Ibadan will know that Micra driver do shifting. The call to make sizeable amount of money by each driver force them to be in haste. They park and pass through unassigned route and most times run into accident trouble.

Smoking And Consumption Of Alcohol (Intoxicants): Micra drivers in Ibadan are known to engage in smoking of cigarette and Indian hemp, they also take local gins (ogogoro) and alcohol which makes them semi – mentally upright to drive a car on major motorable roads.

Poor  Moral Etiquette/Manners  : Most  Ibadan Micra drivers lack manners, they are fond of abusing passengers , they make use of vulgar and foul languages to communicate with people. This effect sometimes results in assaults and exchanging of blows between drivers and passengers, the masses stereotypically believes that anyone who engages in commercial transportation is of poor upbringing and bad behaviour.
In conclusion, the behavior pattern  attached to Micra drivers  in Ibadan is an indictment on the part of the state Vehicles Inspection officers , Federal Road Safety corps FRSC and other relevant  agencies  who have not been  playing active role in ensuring strict compliance to traffic rules and road worthiness .

Buhari approves 213 new broadcasting licences.

President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the issuance of operating licences to 213 new public and private broadcasting outfits in the country.
Director-General of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Ishaq Modibbo-Kawu disclosed this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt at the opening of the 71st General Assembly of Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON).
Giving the breakdown, Modibbo-Kawu said that the president approved 147 new FM radio licences; 23 DTT Television licences, three new national radio network licences and two national television licences.
He said the commission had also received presidential approval for 16 campus radio stations; 24 community broadcasters and three public organisations FM licences.
The Director-General said that the total of 213 licences were the single largest number of stations ever licensed at any point in Nigerian broadcasting history.
He reiterated the importance of BON as the umbrella body for all the broadcasting outfits in the country.
“Our industry is opening up and the importance of broadcasting will become greater as a contributor to the economic fortunes.
“It is also a platform of molding the values of national development,” he said.
The NBC boss raised concerns over the spiking of hate and dangerous speech, that was freely broadcast on leading television networks.
He said the NBC commissioned a major study of Hate and Dangerous Speech in Nigerian broadcasting, using the 2015 general elections as a case study.
“The Validation Report from that study has been presented in Kano; Enugu and Sokoto.
“We will similarly present the report very soon in Lagos and at a big national gathering of broadcasters and other national institutions in Abuja.
“The NBC has also gathered a lot of experience from elections in Anambra; Ekiti and Osun states,” he said.
Modibbo Kawu cautioned that as the country entered the season of heightened political activities, en route the 2019 general elections, NBC would not hesitate to sanction erring stations.
“For us at the NBC, we cannot be responsible for the statements that politicians make.
“It is important to remind the broadcasting outfits in BON, that you would be liable for any violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code by the politicians that you broadcast live during political rallies.
“So, it is your responsibility, not just to collect those huge sums politicians are willing to pay; but you must make them remember the liability you carry for decency in what comes out on radio and television.

Kwankwaso voice out on involvement in release of Kano's Ganduje bribe videos

Senator representing Kano Central, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso says he was aware of the video which showed Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State allegedly receiving money from some contractors.
He, however, said he did everything possible to stop the release to the public but to no avail.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, stated this on a live programme on Aminchi FM in Kano.
Senator Kwankwaso said he pleaded with the Publisher of the online newspaper, Daily Nigerian, which released the video, but noted that they refused to heed his plea.
According to him, “I was aware of the video clips before they were released to the public and I pleaded that they should not be released, but they didn’t listen to me.
“I am not happy that the video clips were made public because it is an embarrassment to the state and its people, including myself.”
DAILY POST reports that Ganduje has since been the subject of several videos, which showed him receiving wads of US dollars from persons believed to be contractors.
At least six of such videos have been published since the first clip was released on October 11
The governor, however, denied collecting money from any contractor, describing it as a calculated attempt to impugn his person.
He later sued the online newspaper for N3 billion, despite earlier intervention by the House of Assembly that he should not do so.

Senegal Government demands return of looted art

The Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar

Senegal’s government has said it wants all of its art currently in French museums to be returned.
Last week an experts’ report, commissioned by France’s President Emmanuel Macron, recommended that African treasures taken without permission be returned to their countries of origin.
The move comes as the new Museum of Black Civilisations is about to open in Senegal's capital, Dakar.
The site will offer nearly 40,000 sq ft of exhibition space.
Senegal's Culture Minister Abdou Latif Coulibaly told the BBC he welcomed the French report as “every piece from Senegal is in France”.
“We've read it and we consider it's a positive report - it's legitimate and follows the course of history”.
The minister says they've already asked the French government for more than 100 artifacts.
Very few countries have put in formal requests for the return of their art, but this could quickly change.
The country with the highest number of art pieces in France is Chad.
For years Dakar has been aiming to position itself as a cultural capital in the region - and now with a president running for re-election, the government is attempting with this museum to make that happen.
The Museum of Black Civilisations was the idea of Senegal’s first President Leopold Sedar Senghor.
More than 50 years later, the project is coming to life, after a $20m (£16m) Chinese investment.

Africans who are foreigners in Europe face 'entrenched prejudice'

A refugee collects his belongings after being evicted from Piazza Venezia in September 2017 in Rome, Italy.
People of African descent continue to face widespread and entrenched prejudice and exclusion in the European Union (EU), a new report says.
The study, by the EU's Agency for Fundamental Rights, is based on interviews carried out in 2015 and 2016 with nearly 6,000 people of African heritage in 12 European countries.
Thirty percent of respondents said they had experienced some form of racial harassment in the previous five years.
Five percent had experienced a violent attack.
The study found notable differences between countries, with two-thirds of respondents in Finland saying they had experienced harassment compared to just over a fifth in the UK.

Lai Mohammed begs churches to preach good about President Buhari

The Federal Government has appealed to churches and other religious organisations to use their platforms to propagate the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the appeal at his country home, Oro, near Ilorin, Kwara, when he paid a Sallah visit to the Parish Priest of St Andrews Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Joseph Awoyale.
He also urged the Churches to use their platform to correct the misconception being circulated by naysayers that Farmers/Herdsmen were religious and ethnic induced.
Mohammed said the clashes were neither religious nor ethnic but resulted from the heightened contest for increasingly-scarce natural resources like land and water, due to demographic, environmental and other reasons.
The Minister said, “Without any form of contradiction, no administration in the history of this country has achieved so much in so little a time and with so little resources in the area of infrastructure.
“We want informed criticism of this administration and we believe that the Church is a better place because you control and influence many souls.

“We want informed criticism of this administration and we believe that the Church is a better place because you control and influence many souls.
“We are not asking anybody to do us an undue favour.
“Where we have performed, people should appreciate and accept it and if they don’t want to, they should stop spreading false information about this government.
“Religious disharmony that is being propagated today by some religious leaders is avoidable and adherents of the two major religions do not have to be enemies.
“However, most of our detractors realising that they cannot fault us on this never talk about the projects rather they are inventing fake news to de-market the administration.
“Also, governors that have not performed will like to heap the blame on the Federal Government.
“But I challenge any of them to match what they have done in the area of infrastructure compare to the Federal Government intervention projects in the state.
“Be rest assured that this administration is committed to infrastructural renewal of this country and we are leaving no stone unturned.
“The administration is working to undo the 20 years of damage by the previous governments.
“If a government comes in three years and able to revive, complete and make provision for abandoned infrastructure, it is only fair for the people to appreciate.
“Admit that the government has responsibility to provide infrastructure, we also expect some degree of honesty from the people and community.”
The minister stated further that the killings in some parts of the country were plotted in order to divide the two religions.
“Thank God the killings have now gone down drastically, thanks to the efforts of the security forces.
“Today, the rhetoric coming out of religious organisations are divisive, incendiary and provocative. They are not healthy for peaceful co-existence and should be stopped forthwith.
“Thank God that those who sought to give the clashes between farmers and herders in Benue and Taraba, among others, a religious coloration have failed. The clashes are neither religious nor ethnic.”
Responding, the parish priest, who said he is partly Muslim and partly Christian by parentage, appreciated the minister for the visit.
He commended the Buhari administration for reconstructing the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road which he said was hitherto a death trap.
“We thank the administration for that and we hope and pray that they will do more for us it term of roads. I must say to you that we need those roads to be able to connect to villages and towns.
“I tell people that a performing administration does not need to campaign. your programmes and achievements will campaign for you.
“Is it the N-POWER? A lot of people are benefitting from that, is it the roads? many are benefitting. We will just continue to encourage you to continue to work for a better Nigeria.”
